Phonics

Intent

At St. Benedict’s, we are committed to delivering a high quality systematic phonics program that will support the children’s skills in recognition, blending and segmenting in order to develop their early reading and writing skills.

The chosen program followed for the teaching of phonics is Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. It sets out a detailed and systematic programme for teaching phonic skills for children starting by the age of five, with the aim of them becoming fluent readers by age seven. This program is delivered on a daily basis. Each lesson is approximately 20 minutes in length and is made up of a Revise-Teach-Practise-Apply format.

Reception
On entry to Reception class, the children are introduced to the first letters and sounds covered in phase 2. The children will complete phases 2, 3 and 4 during their Reception year. Regular assessment will identify children that require additional support so that they can access ‘Keep up’ intervention as and when necessary.

Year 1
Throughout Year 1, the children will work through phase 5 of the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds program covering new GPCs, alternative pronunciations and alternative spellings. Regular assessment will determine which children need to access ‘Keep up’ interventions to support their progress. In June the children in Year 1 complete the statutory Year 1 phonics screening check and the results of this are fed back to the local authority and parents.

Year 2
Children who have not met the expected level at the end of Year 1 will continue to access daily phonics and appropriate ‘Keep up’ interventions.

Impact

Confidence in phonics will allow the children to utilise their blending strategies to become competent, fluent readers and their segmenting skills to support their spellings to become more able writers. In supporting, both of these vital skills, the children will have the ability to fulfil their potential across all aspects of the curriculum.?
